New Delhi: The Indian government has announced that approximately 45 crore devotees, including 15 lakh foreign pilgrims, are expected to attend the ongoing Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, making it one of the largest religious gatherings in the world. This number marks a significant increase compared to the 25 crore people who attended the 2019 Kumbh Mela, as reported by the Ministry of Culture.
The Maha Kumbh began on January 13 and is scheduled to continue until February 26. Uttar Pradesh officials highlighted that the event is set to surpass other major global gatherings in terms of attendance, with the Rio Carnival drawing 70 lakh, Haj attracting 25 lakh, and Oktoberfest hosting 72 lakh visitors.
In addition to its spiritual significance, the Maha Kumbh is projected to provide a major economic boost, with estimates suggesting that it could contribute up to Rs. 2 lakh crore to India’s economy. Uttar Pradesh’s GDP is expected to grow by over 1%, driven by sectors such as trade, tourism, and religious activities. Daily essentials trade is projected at Rs. 17,310 crore, while the hotel and travel industries are set to generate Rs. 2,800 crore. Religious materials and flowers are expected to generate Rs. 2,000 crore and Rs. 800 crore, respectively.
To ensure the event runs smoothly and safely, significant infrastructure developments have been made in Prayagraj, including the construction of 14 new flyovers, 9 permanent ghats, 7 new bus stations, and 12 kilometers of temporary ghats. Security has been bolstered with 37,000 policemen, 14,000 home guards, and 2,750 AI-based CCTV cameras. Health services are being enhanced with 6,000 beds, 43 hospitals, and air ambulances, while sanitation efforts include the deployment of 10,200 workers and 1,800 Ganga Sevadut to maintain cleanliness throughout the event.
