Bokaro: Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL), a subsidiary of SAIL, is set to scale up its hot metal production capacity from 5.25 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 7.55 MTPA, as part of a major expansion plan. The Rs 20,000 crore brownfield projects will not only increase production but also create significant employment opportunities, generating 2,500 permanent jobs and an additional 10,000 indirect jobs in the region.
Union Steel and Heavy Industries Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy unveiled the ambitious expansion plan, which includes the installation of a new 4,500 cubic metre blast furnace, advanced facilities like a thin slab casting and direct rolling plant, a calcining plant, and upgrades to existing coke oven and sinter plant capacities.
“This expansion demonstrates India’s commitment to self-sufficiency in steel production and aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a 300 MTPA steel industry by 2030,” Minister Kumaraswamy said. He also stressed that the investment in infrastructure and technology will strengthen the steel sector and significantly contribute to the nation’s economic growth.
As part of its sustainability initiatives, BSL is focusing on reducing its carbon footprint, aiming to cut carbon emissions from 2.67 tonnes per tonne of crude steel to below 2.2 tonnes by 2030. The plant is also advancing its renewable energy efforts, with plans for 30 MW of floating solar power, 20 MW of land-based solar power, and 100 MW of renewable energy sourced through a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with SECI.
“These efforts will ensure that Bokaro Steel Plant optimizes energy consumption while maximizing capacity utilization, paving the way for a sustainable future for India’s steel industry,” the minister added.
Since its establishment in 1965, BSL has seen tremendous growth, with its initial capacity of 1.7 MTPA expanding to 5.25 MTPA over the years. The latest expansion is poised to further enhance its role in India’s steel production sector.
