Trump Approves Extradition of 26/11 Mumbai Attack Suspect Tahawwur Rana to India

RNS: US President Donald Trump announced that the United States approved the extradition of Tahawwur Rana, a key suspect in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, to India. Speaking during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the US, Trump described Rana as “one of the very evil people of the world” involved in the horrific attacks that claimed 166 lives in Mumbai.

Rana, a Canadian citizen of Pakistani origin, had unsuccessfully challenged his extradition in US courts, and the US Supreme Court recently cleared the way for his transfer to India. The accused is currently held in a high-security prison in the United States.

Rana was linked to David Coleman Headley, the Pakistani-American member of the terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), who played a pivotal role in orchestrating the attacks. The coordinated assaults, which took place over four days starting November 26, 2008, involved shootings and bombings across key Mumbai locations, including the Taj Hotel, Oberoi Trident, and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. The attacks were among the deadliest in India, leaving at least 174 people dead, including nine attackers.

India has long sought Rana’s extradition to face justice for his involvement in the attacks, which prompted widespread global outrage.
