Airtel to bring Starlink to India, join hands with Elon Musk’s SpaceX

New Delhi: Bharti Airtel has entered into an agreement with SpaceX to introduce Starlink’s satellite internet services in India, according to a regulatory filing on Tuesday. The partnership, however, is subject to regulatory approvals for SpaceX to offer Starlink in the country.

This collaboration will enable Airtel and SpaceX to work together on expanding internet connectivity across India, especially in underserved regions. As part of the agreement, Airtel may retail Starlink equipment and offer its high-speed satellite internet to businesses. The companies also plan to provide reliable internet access to rural schools, healthcare centers, and remote communities, aiming to bridge the digital divide.

SpaceX’s security clearance application with the Indian government is currently under review by the Home Ministry.

Industry analysts suggest the partnership allows Airtel to offer consumer satellite services, as its own satellite venture, OneWeb, focuses primarily on business clients. This move also intensifies the competition between Airtel and Reliance Jio, particularly as both companies have had differing opinions on spectrum allocation for such services.

Airtel and SpaceX will explore how Starlink can complement Airtel’s existing services, and leverage Airtel’s expertise and infrastructure in India. The collaboration will help expand Airtel’s network, especially in rural areas with limited coverage, while offering Starlink’s enterprise solutions to businesses and communities.

Gopal Vittal, MD and Vice-Chairman of Bharti Airtel, called the partnership a significant milestone in their pursuit of next-gen satellite connectivity. Gwynne Shotwell, President of SpaceX, expressed excitement about collaborating with Airtel, noting its vital role in India’s telecom landscape.
