Mauritius: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Mauritius on Tuesday for a two-day official visit, where he was warmly welcomed by his Mauritian counterpart, Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam. In a message on X (formerly Twitter), Modi expressed gratitude for the welcome, calling it an opportunity to enhance collaboration between the two nations across various sectors.
During the visit, Modi is scheduled to meet with President Dharam Gokhool and PM Ramgoolam, as well as address a community event. He will also be the chief guest at Mauritius’ National Day celebrations on March 12, where a contingent from the Indian Defence Forces, along with a ship from the Indian Navy, will participate.
Ahead of his departure, Modi highlighted Mauritius as a key partner in the Indian Ocean, emphasizing their shared history, culture, and democratic values. He expressed hope that his visit would strengthen bilateral ties and contribute to regional security and development under India’s “Vision SAGAR.”
Modi’s visit is expected to build on the longstanding friendship between the two nations, which share deep historical, cultural, and demographic ties, with a large Indian-origin population in Mauritius. India and Mauritius have had close diplomatic relations since Mauritius gained independence in 1968. This visit marks Modi’s first trip to the island nation since 2015.
Mauritius, with a population of 1.2 million, has strong historical connections to India, particularly through the Indian diaspora that arrived under British and French colonial rule. These shared bonds have fostered enduring cooperation in areas like maritime security, development, and cultural exchange.
